Who has torn their ACL their first time snow skiing and have snow skiied since then?

Question by Harpomyminischnauzer: Who has torn their ACL their first time snow skiing and have snow skiied since then?
I tore my ACL within the first two hours of my first snow skiing experience. Now I am scared to try it again (with some professional help of course) but I want to know if there is anyone out there with the same experience and how was snow skiing with a bum knee (after surgery). [I had surgery about a year ago]
Thanks for the snowboarding idea, I have thought about that too. I have been really good about rehab and keeping it strong. Where do you get this brace you are talking about and what is it exactly? I have a brace from surgery but that would not be fun to be active in. Thanks!

I haven’t but my best friend has. He had surgery and tried to ski again the next season. He seemed to have a little discomfort, but he also didn’t do all of his PT. How you well feel is mainly determined by how well you have rehabbed. If you did all of your exercises and keep your leg strong you shouldn’t have any problems. I have another friend who tore his ACL skiing early in the season, and was back on skis by the end of the season. I also knew one old ex-Marine who skied without and ACL for about 5 years. He did a lot of strength exercises and kept his legs very strong though.

Don’t worry, with a little professional assistance you’ll be fine. As you can tell I’ve had many friends tear their ACLs. They’ve all gotten back on skis and they’re all fine.

GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN!!!

Wow you are lucky first time. I used to go to steamboat, never got ot be a really good skier, though. They will probably have a school for you there, where they will teach you how to snow plow ski. Even if you have never skied, you will only need two or three hours of instruction to snow plow, stopping and turning is easy, you will be able to handle all the “Green-coded slopes”. Buy ski clothes, Gortex if you can afford it, dont try skiing in your blue jeans cuz ya WILL be falling down, and you dont really want to get wet and miserable early in the day. Have fun.

Q&A: What is it like to go Scuba Diving for the first time?

Question by codered320: What is it like to go Scuba Diving for the first time?
I am planning on signing up for some Scuba Diving classes but I am still nervous about being under water with big fish. And I have a fear of really cramped places, but I have always liked swimming. Is the first time going really scary? I have never done anything like this before.

Trust me when i tried it for the first time it was completely mind blowing…it was like no other!

At the beginning you will be scared and breathing might trouble you but it is all about believing in yourself and your equipment. YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE ENOUGH OXYGEN! remember that it really helps and when you inhale inhale strongly and when you exhale exhale slowly.

These where a few beginning tips now swimming with the fish is an experience that is really unique because not everyone can do it, fish will swim away from you if you behave abruptly in the water but if you are calm the fish won;t come near you and you will enjoy swimming with them. And underwater is not cramped! ;)

Trust me if you are going to sign in for the classes then you made a choice that you will never forget and will be in your mind and heart forever =D!

Edit: I know it is not oxygen only…i was just saying explaining a point..you don’t have to be too accurate..

Q&A: About to go snow skiing for first time. Or should I board?

Question by n8sloth: About to go snow skiing for first time. Or should I board?
I have no experience with skiing or snowboarding (or water skiing and wake boarding for that matter), so my abilities are awful to begin with. Would I better suited to to begin on skis or a snow board? Why? Do you have any advice for me? Thanks!

snowboarding is a lot harder than skiing. it takes more balance than skiing. skiing is also safer. and easier to learn when first starting off. but try both to see which one you like more
